Letter From the President

Dear MSFA Members,

I hope you are enjoying the summer and taking some time to relax and appreciate this lovely season.

There are several opportunities in this summer issue of Food for Thought that I would like to highlight

  • Green Plate Special - We are pleased to collaborate with Ilene Bezahler of Edible Boston, a beautiful and informative magazine that has already featured many of our members. MSFA members now have an opportunity to participate in a full page group ad in Edible Boston for a very reasonable price. The deadline for this commitment is August 15. See Green Plate Special for details.
  • MA Marketplace – This yearly event held at the headquarters of the MA Horticultural Society in Wellesely, MA,again promises to be a great way to meet consumers and specialty food store buyers as well as sell your products. See “Member Participation” section for details. Also, the MSFA has the opportunity to provide refreshments for the vendors at this event. If you would like to donate product for vendors to enjoy all day, please contact me ccoutrier@aol.com by July 30.
  • Our next Networking Event will be held at The Country Hen in Hubbardston, MA, on Sept. 13, 2007, 10:30AM-1 PM. Rain date – Sept. 20. Be sure to come out to this innovative organic egg farm for a tour and interesting experience as well as network with fellow MSFA members. Please note that non MSFA members are welcome. See “The Food Network” for details and registration information.

Our next issue of Food for Thought will be released in October. If you and your company have been in the spotlight (media exposure) or you have news to share, please send it to me ccoutrier@aol.com by Sept. 15.

With warm regards,
Carol Coutrier, President

Green Plate Special

Edible Boston

Dear Members of The Massachusetts Specialty Foods Association,

MSFA is working with Edible Boston to design an advertisement to be run in the October, 2007, issue of the magazine. For those of you who have not seen Edible Boston, it is a locally published magazine with a mission to “change how consumers eat, shop and think about local food.” The magazine focuses on individuals and companies in the greater Boston area who are growing and producing food, whether it be a local farmer, baker or caterer. The emphasis is on local and seasonal food.

Despite its name, Edible Boston encompasses all of the surrounding counties: Essex, Middlesex, Worcester, Suffolk, and Norfolk.

Edible Boston is published seasonally and will be available to the public free of charge. Distributed through advertisers, local farmer’s markets, and other food related events in the region advertisers will have an opportunity to reach 75,000 desirable consumers each season. Edible Boston, like no other publication in the area directly targets your market. As Andrea Taber of Ever So Humble Pie Co. will testify, advertising in Edible Boston has in a very short time increased her customer base. Within the first week the magazine was distributed, she acquired two new accounts and has continued to increase her business through the exposure in the magazine.

MSFA is hoping to do a full page ad that will include ads from the individual companies participating. In order for us to go ahead with this ad, we will need a minimum of 6 (maximum of 9) companies to participate. The cost per company is listed below. Each company will be represented with an ad measuring 2 ½” Wide X 3” High.

  • Commitment for one issue - $250.00

In order to take part in this offer, we will need a commitment in the form of a check for $250. from you by August 15.
Help with artwork is available from Edible Boston at no charge.

If you are interested, please mail your $250. check made out to the MSFA to

MSFA, C/O Carol Coutrier,

by August 15, 2007.

Artwork should be emailed to Ilene Bezahler at Edible Boston ilene@edibleboston.net

by August 15, 2007.

About The Country Hen:

The Country Hen believes in old-fashioned egg farming.

We removed the cages and installed windows back in the 1980’s.

Unlike the mass manufactured egg producers, our hens:

  • Are allowed to roam freely within a barn and outside on porches!
  • Receive sunlight through windows, not constant, low–wattage artificial light which causes stress to hens;
  • Are fed certified organic feed that contains absolutely no pesticides, herbicides or fungicides;
  • Healthier hens mean a healthier egg for you.
  • Highest in Omega-3 essential fatty acids, all three types!
  • Highest in Choline
  • We mill our own feed right here!

Debra’s Natural Gourmet and Stark Sisters Granola

www.theDishsDishes.com. Featured in the New York Times, founded by Jill Donenfeld right after she graduated from Columbia (she’s now 22), Jill and her six culinistas cook for Manhattan’s foodies. Jill said in her newsletter, The Dish ,“Fairway shoppers are some of the luckiest in the city, not just because of the dirt-cheap prices compared to other Upper West Side grocers, but because Fairway carries Stark Sister's Granola…. You'll want to experiment with recipes found at www.StarkSisters.com. The Nectarine Granola Cobbler is a stand out! If you can't make it to Fairway, order directly from Debra's Natural Gourmet.” Jill made sure all her customers received samples of Stark Sisters. Food brings people together!

PBS and Nancy Porter Productions were in the Boston area filming “The true story of the topsy-turvey child who became an American icon.” This story will be a multimedia, brilliant and timely special on Louisa May Alcott. Why do we tell you this? Well, Debra’s Natural Gourmet had the honor of preparing lunch for the hard-working crew each day. (Tom and his wife, Jane, worked behind the scenes on this project.) When will the show air? Sometime next spring or summer, we’re told. Fun.

Debra’s Natural Gourmet and Stark Sisters Granola are proud to be sponsors of the Lowell Music Festival. Join us for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Thursday, July 19th at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, August 4th for The Boston Edge: Joe Derrane, Seamus Connolly, & John McGann, the dream team Irish trio. Massachusetts Marketplace Festival

Saturday, August 18, 2007, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Elm Bank Horticulture Center
900 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA 02482 • Phone: 617-933-4900 • Fax: 617-933-4901

May 2007

Greetings!

We warmly invite you to participate as an exhibitor in the eleventh annual Massachusetts Marketplace Festival scheduled for Saturday, August 18, 2025 (Rain Date, Sunday, August 19) at MHS’s Elm Bank Horticulture Center in Wellesley.

Celebrating the quality and abundance of local agriculture, floriculture, specialty foods and crafts, the annual festival includes vendor and information booths, demonstrations, and the Children’s Petting Zoo. We expect attendance to be similar to the previous years' crowds of over 2,300 guests.

Exhibitors are allowed to provide samples, as well as to sell product. This is a great chance to test the market or spread word about new products to a sophisticated audience. Last year, the event featured vendors from all over the Commonwealth who showcased everything from organic produce to handmade clothing and accessories to cooking sauces, dips and desserts.

Space is limited, so we ask you to please return your registration form as soon as possible.

The application deadline is July 22. Early response allows both you and our staff to plan for and promote your attendance. Please take some time to review the exhibitor information and call the contacts listed on the exhibitor brochure if you have any questions. We hope you will join with MHS, the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the Massachusetts Specialty Food Association in making this year's Marketplace a successful partnership to promote the many agricultural efforts across the Commonwealth.

Sincerely,

Robert Feige Scott Soares

Interim Executive Director Acting Commissioner

Massachusetts Horticultural Society Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources

New Product Announcements

Notting Hall

"Tea has been finding its way to Britain since the 17th century when Catherine de Braganza of Portugal introduced tea to the British. In spite of the high taxes imposed on tea, sales rapidly overtook coffee, and tea went on to become the symbol of the British way of life. It was Mary of Modena who is credited with introducing tea to Scotland. In 1680 while visiting her husband, the then Duke of York (after whom New York is named), she became enamored of this intriguing brew and brought 'tea' back with her to Scotland.

Upon returning recently from Scotland, we realized that our selection of breakfast teas was lacking. We had a brisk English Breakfast and robust Irish Breakfast, but no Scottish Breakfast. Well, our trio is now complete. Our Scottish Breakfast combines malty, full-bodied Assams with just a hint of "oakyness". Whether for your breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, dinner, tea or supper, we know you'll enjoy the heartiness of this blend. Best enjoyed with a wee bit of sugar and drop of milk.

This new blend, as well as our other 130 high-quality teas, are available in 2oz, 4oz, 8oz and 16oz sizes and can be purchased through our website at www.NottingHall.com or simply by calling at 866.361.TEAS. Wholesale is also available."
