Letter From the President

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear MSFA Members,
As we enter this New Year of 2005, our thoughts and support go out to those whose lives have been forever changed by the effects of the tsunami. I trust that we MSFA members are opening our hearts and our pocketbooks to those who are in such great need at this time. There are many reputable non- profit relief agencies that need our support, such as The American Red Cross, Oxfam America, etc. See www.usaid.gov for an extensive listing of relief organizations working in the disaster area.
MSFA Annual Meeting at the Lanam Club was a smashing success with great networking, company displays, delicious food, recognition ceremony and relevant keynote address by Boston Herald food editor, Jane Dornbusch. Especially heartening at Annual Meeting this year was the outpouring of support by MSFA members who donated clothing and books for the tea pickers of Darjeeling, India, an initiative spearheaded by Maureen Ryan of Notting Hall. MSFA "Taste of Massachusetts" Gift Basket Program Progress
By Alison Chateauneuf, Coordinator
(To View the Baskets and/or Order, click onto www.msfa.net, then "Gift Baskets" then "A Taste of Massachusetts")
We have started promotion of the Baskets in a few different areas:
1)Annual Meeting and again at the Tree Lighting at the Statehouse December 9th. It was a very good affair and the baskets made a wonderful presentation. The Governor and a couple of Senators showed a good deal of interest in obtaining the baskets for people that they send items.. And, individuals took the beautiful full color flyers with photographs by Ellen Callaway of Callaway Photo and design by Bohoy Design.
2) The MA Dept. of Agricultural Resources has also inserted 200 flyers in the Ag in the Classroom Calenders that will be given to all the Representative and State Senators over the next week.
3) We have had a wonderful opportunity presented to us through Susan Allison of Thoreau Foods. We were offered an ad in the Massachusetts Vacation Guide at a significant discount.
This publication can be viewed on http://www.massvacation.com/. The publication prints 750,000 magazine type publications; 250,000 are distributed to the high end zip code areas via the New York Times. The advertisement consists of a 1/2 page, four color ad on the right side of the page. There is also an insert placed in the magazine so that active leads for the baskets can be requested, of which our sales flyers will be sent out to the requestor. Guide is due out in March/April.
The basket program is a self funding program, in order to do this campaign, all participants in the program will neet to pitch in. Susan and I have talked to a number of people and have received a very favorable "Yeah" to do this. This is truly a good way to stretch our advertising dollars! We figure cost per participant of the basket will be around $100.
10% of every basket will be donated to the MSFA by Pemberton Farms to help to build a revenue stream for the organization and help us grow our businesses too! Many thanks to Pemberton Farms for their support of this program and for making the program possible. It is a WIN-WIN for us all. So promote the baskets. Have a newsletter? Promote the baskets...send them to the MSFA website, not only can they read about the baskets but they can possibly review the members list and find a diverse group of individuals who make some fantastic products!
Thoreau Foods put it in their newsletter and 4 Baskets were sold that we know of, to one individual. KUDO"s to Thoreau Foods!
If you would like any flyers please let me know and I will send them out to you. Thank your for you effort and support in this project. It is greatly appreciated!
Ever So Humble Pie Company was contacted in August by the producers of the show Recipe For Success which airs on the Food Network, Tuesdays at 9:30pm. They expressed interest in featuring Andrea Taber and her company, Ever So Humble Pie Co because it fits with their format of featuring individuals who launched businesses in the food industry following a career change. After working as a Registered Nurse for 25yrs, Andrea shifted gears and began her pie company. The show not only showcases the particular products that a company produces, but also the nuts and bolts of how the company came into being, the costs incurred and the ongoing management and entrepreneurial challenges that are faced.
They spent two days with the company in early October filming at both the Farmer's Market in Milton and the manufacturing site in East Walpole. Sampsons Featured on NBC Today Show "In Style" Segment On Wed., Oct. 20, 2004.
Amy E. Goodman, editor of In Style magazine gave the "Today" show's Ann Curry some suggestions for hostess gifts for holiday events and dinners. "Complete the beverages with some sweet or savory handmade nuts by Sampsons, sure to be a party pleaser with their unusual flavors: citrus-curried cashews, sweet and spicy pecans, wild and smoky pistachios, hot and sassy almonds or dark and decadent pecans ($5 for a 5-ounce bag; 877-977- 0077 or sampsonsnuts.com)."
***************
Sampson's in Daily Candy
You know what they say. Good things come in small batches. Well, okay. That's not exactly how it goes.
But that's the claim of Sampsons, a company that handmakes delicious nut creations. The brightly colored packages contain inventive mixtures - citrus- curried cashews, spicy almonds, smoky pistachios - all made from hand-tossed spices to ensure the very best taste.
As for what to do with the confections, Sampsons has a few suggestions: The six-pack sampler makes a great present. Try the citrus-curried cashews on spinach salad or coconut ice cream. For something really special, throw some of the sweet and spicy pecans into your next serving of oatmeal. Of course, you can always just pop 'em straight into your mouth. But we can't guarantee that you'll stop at one batch. Hey. At least they're small.
Meredith Springfield honored for community work
By Frank Antosiewicz
PLASTICS NEWS CORRESPONDENT
LUDLOW, MASS. (Oct. 27, 5 p.m. EDT) -- Blow molder Meredith Springfield Associates Inc.'s work within the community is earning it plaudits and at the same time is helping it to grow its business.
The firm was cited Oct. 25 as the Exemplary Business Partner of the Year by Sunshine Village of Chicopee, Mass., a nonprofit group that works with people with developmental disabilities.
The arrangement has worked well, according to Mel O'Leary, Meredith Springfield president and chief executive officer.
"They do assembly, boxing, labeling and palletizing. The scope of the operation allows us to add value for the customer at a rate that we can afford. Otherwise, it might have been work we wouldn't have been able to do," O'Leary said.
"We've never had one quality control problem - that's with hundreds of thousands of parts processed," he said.
The arrangement has been in place a year, according to Colleen Baker, director of employment services at Sunshine Village. She noted that the organization's work center keeps about 35 people employed doing fulfillment work for different companies. "Meredith Springfield has been wonderful to work with. They are right down the street and their personnel come in regularly and supply us with work on a regular basis," she said.
Meredith Springfield employs 80. The 23-year-old company has experienced steady growth, and expects sales to rise 7-8 percent this year.
The company specializes in custom plastic bottles and hollow technical articles. It makes food packaging, household and industrial chemical containers, and hollow items for the medical market, business machines, foot-wear and PVC fencing.
O'Leary said the company occupies 35,000 square feet of a 90,000-square-foot building, but plans to exercise an option to buy the rest of the building.
The firm also employs prisoners from the Hampden County, Mass., sheriff's office - pre-released prisoners from a jail about two miles in the opposite direction of Sunshine Village. In fact, Meredith Springfield was honored by the sheriff's office last year as its pre-release employer of the year.
O'Leary said that program also has been a success, with 30 ex-prisoners having worked at the company.
"Between the Sunshine Village experience and the partnership with the jail, they are just two things Meredith Springfield does to put something back in the community. "It's been a very worthwhile way to help the community," he said.
NUTRITION in the NEWSJAN 2005, Volume 2/1
Nutrition is in the news everywhere. This column is brought to you by Foodlogics Consulting. MSFA readers can feast on nutrition newsbytes, including, but not limited to updates on government action affecting food labels.
FDA's CFSAN Outlines 2005 Goals
In December 2004, The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition of the Food and Drug Administration outlined its 2005 priorities, unveiling an ambitious list of 123 "A-list" goals. Special emphasis will be placed on issuing final rules for the four major areas of the Bioterrorism Act of 2002. Industry can also expect action involving egg safety, fresh produce, low-carb labeling and food allergen warnings, among others.
The work plan is divided into sections, such as Priority Ongoing Activities, Ensuring Food Safety and Defense, Improving Nutrition and Dietary Supplement Safety.
To read the letter outlining program priorities, go to: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cfsand04.html
2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report
On August 19, 2004, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines advisory committee submitted its recommendations to the secretaries of the departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA). The report will serve as the basis for the 6th edition of Nutrition and Your Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans that HHS and USDA expect to publish in January 2005. The committee recommends that the Guidelines convey nine major messages, including:
Calorie Control
Physical Activity
Whole Grains and Fruits and Vegetables
Healthy Fats
Food Variety
Less Salt in preparation
Keeping food safe
Trade Show Tips
On the eve of the Winter Fancy Food Show and with many more to come, it is worth taking a few moments and thinking about how to optimize the trade show investment.
*Write down your objectives for the show
Ideally, assemble all those going to the show and discuss the major objectives that you want to accomplish at the show. These might include:
*Have meetings with specific key customers, brokers, distributors
*Spotlight a new product or packaging change
*Introduce new hires to key people in their market
*Check out the greedy competition
*Write orders for specific new or existing products with or without a show deal
*Attract the press - trade and consumer for purposes of getting publicity for your product.
*Plan, plan, plan, plan, plan, plan ahead
*Make appointments 4-6 weeks out with the people that you most want to meet with.
*Based on the purpose of the meeting, determine whether your booth is the best venue or if scheduling a breakfast meeting or dinner is more appropriate.
*Make sure that you schedule a meeting with each of your brokers OR have a broker sales meeting away from the show floor.
*Make a schedule of who will work the booth at what time for each day.
*Make a schedule of all appointments made in advance of the show.
*Discuss where leads will be kept and who will be responsible for them.
*Determine any special roles - e.g., who will handle export inquiries.
*Decide if you will offer a show deal, determine what it will be, create three- part order forms.
*Network, network, network.
*Attend show social events, receptions.
*Try to schedule customers or brokers for every dinner.
You are at the show, at great expense. Make every hour count.
Happy Holidays from the Division of Federal - State Relations/USFDA
Today, this Division began mailing a copy of a CD entitled Food Allergy Training Guide for Restaurants and Food Services, A Comprehensive Program on CD- ROM, produced by The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network to the following categories of state and local officials. This comprehensive program, developed in cooperation with the National Restaurant Association and its members, provides the tools to train food service staff to safely prepare and serve food to guests who have food allergies.
The CD's are being mailed to: State Health Commissioners, State Agriculture Commissioners, State Food/Food Service Program Directors, and local health units thru an address listing given to us by NACCHO.
Since this Division does not have email access to most of the local health units, we ask that you forward this message on to them if you have this capability.
